Leaking bastarding motherfuckers keep ruining my plans. Last time it rained I tightened up my latches thinking that would fix it. Today I need the car so I go out to it this morning and my passenger seat is thoroughly soaked. The driver seat is ok but the back is pretty wet. And unlike a ‘regular’ car roof I can’t just find the leak and silicone it oh no I have to get a new $300 top and pay someone a shitload to install it correctly or risk fucking it up myself. Or spend more than the car cost me and buy a fucking hardtop that are obscenely expensive because of reasons.
Fucking miatas.

I would buy the new top. *Solves problems*

Shhhh.... Don’t dissuade me.

I’ve done obscene amounts of research and seen so many people who buy a new top, get it installed, everything is shiny, and it still leaks.

GET A HARDTOP.

One of the many reasons why I’d never own a convertible.

Where do they leak? Just for my knowledge.

I hate convertibles. I would get the hard top. My Z is obviously a hardtop but the wipers are just not very good so I always put RainX on it. Well I also try not to get it wet!

It’s fucking brilliant when it’s not pissing from the sky

I can’t even figure out where the water is coming from, otherwise I would have duct taped that bitch shut tighter than a 400 pound wart-covered virgin’s ass.

Dat fastback tho. Unf. I have a lead on a local hard top for sale just down the street from my work. he wants $800 and says it’s in great condition but I drove by and the glass is cracked and the paint is faded and peeling. I’ll offer $300 my next paycheck and see if I can replace the window with lexan. Might be my best bet.

I’m not nearly as familiar with Miatas as you are, but I have a hard time believing that proper installation is something only a shop can accomplish. Is there a special tool for this?
As for the top itself, there’s gotta be replacements available that are as good (or even better) than the original.

I don’t get why tops are so much, my friend has an S2000 and those are ridiculous.

That sucks. Kinda like an electrical problem. Good luck with it.

Waterproof seat covers.
Cheap and easy!

I have some vinyl autozone shitty seat covers I’m going to put on for now, but my next paycheck is either going for some legitimate faux-leather Miata seats or a hardtop.

Doesn’t appear to be.

Precisely.

Oh yeah. S2000 tops are next-level ridiculous.

The cheapest ebay tops are around $160 and are perfectly serviceable. Problem is installation requires lots of drilling rivets and installing new ones and doing it all very carefully to avoid damaging the rain rail and creating more leaks unless you ghetto-rig a new rail or buy a $150 part.

I like to live dangerously. Plus, if it’s as good as they say it is, the top will be fine. Plus, I live in the Southeast.

I know that feel - Mine likes to pool where the little arrow is, on a ledge under the soft top. Having the hard top on it does nothing. Fortunately I bummed some garage space for the winter.

How about a cheap car cover? Toss it in the trunk when you’re driving and pull it out for overnight or if rain is expected...

Wasn’t someone on oppo selling a miata hard top a little while ago? I believe they were also giving a pretty good oppo discount

Damn, was there? I’m sure shipping would kill me though.

Yeah I forgot who but he was turning his miata into an exocet and was parting it out I think

I love certain convertibles, but this is why I generally don’t think I would ever get one...then again, most of the time they seem to end up OK with tinkering and adjustment!

What if I told you paying someone a shitload to install it correctly may yield worse results than doing it yourself? Surely I’m not the only one who’s had bad experiences with “professionals”. Guys are paid by the hour.
For your money, you get a perceived amount of experience and innate knowledge. But you’re not necessarily getting someone who will spend time carefully getting it right and researching when he gets stuck. He’s working to the clock.
When I got my headunit replaced in my 300ZX (back when I was a kid) I paid a guy. There’s a black plastic strip that clips off and clips on. Apparently he had some trouble, so he glued the thing.
I could see the glue poking out from around the edge.
He was an idiot. Clearly I paid the wrong guy, but do you have a Miata-softtop-installation-expert to throw money at? Because I’m here to tell you, throwing money doesn’t guarantee anything at all.
